Font or Glyph Concerns (Missing or Not Functioning Properly)
If you are experiencing one of the following font installation issues, please continue with the steps below to resolve the concern:
- The font is missing entirely, from the Fonts section of the library and the Text Style font list in Silhouette Studio
- The font name appears in the Fonts section of the library but has a blank thumbnail image
- The font is showing in the library but not in the Text Style font list**
**Please note, fonts sometimes have different names in the software font list than they do in the store. The initials of the artist are often at the front of the font name, causing them to be in a different location in the Text Style list than the customer is expecting. For example, Jersey Font, by Lori Whitlock, appears in the font list as LW Jersey.
Font Families
Some fonts contained under a font family are listed as a style option when the main font name is selected in the Text Style font list. If the font you are attempting to access happens to be from a family of fonts (where there are variations of the same font family name), locate the main parent font name in the Text Style font list and then locate the alternate font options in the style list located in the panel, within a drop-down arrow by the B I U options.
If you are missing fonts, or any other purchased content, from the Silhouette Design Store, you can follow the steps listed here to make sure all of your purchases download to your library here.
If the font was purchased or downloaded from a 3rd party source, not from the Silhouette Design Store, you will simply need to ensure the font is installed fully on the computer. In order to be automatically utilized by Silhouette Studio, the font type must be True Type (.ttf) or Open Type (.otf).
To manually install a font to your computer, you may use the steps below.
Install the font on a PC:
- Depending on your download environment, the download may show in the downloads section of your browser OR in the default download location
- Open the downloaded folder
- Double-click on the desired font to install
- A font management window will open
- Select the Install option in the upper-left of the window
- The Install button will turn grey, indicating that the font has been installed
Install the font on a MAC:
- Depending on your download environment, the download may show in the downloads section of your browser OR in the default download location
- Open the downloaded folder
- Double-click on the desired font to install
- A font management window will open
- Select the Install option in the lower-right of the window
- The font management window will close, indicating that the font has been installed
Alternately, the following may be performed on a Mac:
- Exit the Silhouette Studio® software
- Open the Applications folder
- Open the Font Book app
- Go to the File menu
- Select Add Fonts
- Select a font or a folder containing multiple fonts
- Click Open to install the font(s)
Once the font is installed to the computer, please close and re-open the Silhouette Studio software.
If the font is showing in the library, please first follow these steps to force the font installation:
- Open the Silhouette Studio® software program
- Go to the Library
- Go to the My Fonts section
- Right-click on the font name
- Select the Install option
- Close the Silhouette Studio® program completely
- Click OK on the prompt to Install Fonts
- Re-open the Silhouette Studio® software program
NOTE: Steps 1-5 will only work for fonts downloaded from the Silhouette Design Store. If the font was obtained from another source, it will not be installed into the Fonts section of the library. 3rd party fonts may simply be installed into the Fonts directory of the computer and then the software closed and re-opened. These will appear in the Text Style font list only.
Many glyphs are accessible using the glyphs panel within the Designer Edition of Silhouette Studio. At present, Sihouette Studio does not support all available glyph libraries utilized by font creators. All available glyphs can be accessed through your computers Font Book (Mac) or Character Map (PC). To access these glyphs, follow the steps below:
PC/WINDOWS:
- Press the Windows key and R-key simultaneously
- Type in charmap and press Enter
- The Character Map window will appear
- In the Font drop-down, navigate to the desired font
- Check the box next to Advanced View
- In the Group by drop-down, navigate to Unicode Subrange
- The Group By window will pop up next to the Character Map window
- Scroll to the bottom of the Group By window and select Private Use Characters. All available glyphs should now be displayed in the Character Map.
- In the Font box, click the font you want to use.
- Click the special character that you want to insert, click Select, and then click Copy
- Open Silhouette Studio® software
- Click the Text Tool
- On the Edit menu, click Paste
- Click to select the pasted text with the gray selection box
- Click the Text Style Panel
- Choose the font from the list
MAC:
- Open the Finder
- Open the Applications option
- Open the Font Book application
- Select the View Menu
- Select the Repertoire option
- Find the font and character you wish to use
- Click to select the desired character
- Press Command + c to copy
- Open Silhouette Studio® software
- Click the Text Tool
- On the Edit menu, click Paste (or press Command + v)
- Click to select the pasted text with the gray selection box
- Click the Text Style Panel
- Choose the font from the list
Your text should show up after following these steps. If it does not, again please note that there is a limitation to how much the Silhouette Studio® program can accept being pasted and you may need to copy and paste smaller strings of text rather than a larger section of text all at once.
